Baby Suction Plate – Eddie Elephant

How the suction works

A continuous flat silicone ring around the base of the plate. Press the plate firmly onto a smooth, clean surface (high-chair tray, glass table, polished wood) — the silicone deforms then springs back, creating a vacuum cavity. Atmospheric pressure does the rest. Holds against a sweep, releases with an intentional edge-lift.

About 8 inches across. Three food compartments, each about 1 inch deep — sized for one toddler meal, not adult portions. The Eddie Elephant sculpt is integral to the plate, molded in, not printed. Nothing to peel.

Frequently asked

Will it work on my high chair? On smooth plastic high-chair trays, yes. Textured plastic trays reduce suction strength. Quick test: press it down, try to lift from a corner.

Can my baby pull it off? Eventually, around month 18, kids figure out the edge-lift release. The suction matters most during the 12–18 month flip-test phase.

How does it compare to a non-slip plate? Non-slip resists sliding; suction resists lifting. Different problems. For the "let's see what happens" phase, suction is the requirement.

Can it go in the dishwasher AND microwave? Both. Top rack in the dishwasher. The silicone holds heat in the microwave better than the food does — handle the plate by the edge after heating.

The compartments and character mold

The three compartments are sized intentionally. The largest at the bottom holds a main course (pasta, rice, eggs, finger foods). The two smaller ones at the top hold sides — cut fruit, vegetables, dipping sauce. Compartment depth is about an inch — deep enough to hold real food, shallow enough that a 12-month-old can reach in without flopping the hand.

The Eddie Elephant sculpt occupies the top half of the plate, above the food compartments. The character is functional, not decorative — kids attach to the plate as their plate, which is the reason the plate stays in rotation longer than a generic one. The sculpt is high-relief enough to be tactile but flush enough not to interfere with food placement.

Suction strength, by design

The suction is calibrated to hold against a toddler's sweeping arm and release with an intentional adult edge-lift. It's not the maximum suction we could engineer — that would require a knife to remove. It's the right amount of suction for the use case. A determined toddler will figure out the edge-lift around 18 months; that's also the age the plate matters less because food-sweeping is less common.

The base is one continuous silicone ring around the perimeter of the plate. Some competitor designs use a center suction cup, which works on flat surfaces but fails on textured trays. The continuous ring grips a wider variety of surfaces and seals more reliably.
