The Cotton Problem Most Parents Don’t Think About

When you pick up a pair of cotton baby pajamas, the label tells you almost nothing about what it cost the planet to make them. Cotton has been a default for children’s sleepwear for decades — soft, familiar, widely available. But the environmental ledger behind conventional cotton is harder to ignore once you look at it.

Conventional cotton is one of the most water-intensive crops on earth. Growing just one kilogram of cotton fiber — roughly enough for a single pair of adult jeans — requires approximately 10,000 to 20,000 liters of water. For baby pajamas, the per-garment footprint is smaller, but the upstream impact at the crop level remains the same. That water demand has contributed to documented ecological disasters in cotton-growing regions, particularly in Central Asia and parts of India.

Beyond water, conventional cotton farming relies on a heavy load of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, seven of the top 15 pesticides used in cotton farming are known carcinogens. These chemicals don’t stay on the farm — they leach into waterways, accumulate in soil, and in some cases leave residues in finished fabric. The closed-loop claim has substance because it’s audited and traceable — the wood sourcing is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or PEFC, which requires verified sustainable forest management.

There is one honest caveat worth noting: lyocell production is energy-intensive. The dissolving and solvent-recovery steps require significant heat, and total energy usage for TENCEL™ Lyocell ranges from 65 to 101 GJ per tonne depending on the energy mix at the facility. Conventional cotton fiber produced in the U.S. uses roughly 55 GJ per tonne — lower on this single metric. Lenzing has addressed this in part by powering newer facilities with biomass and pursuing a Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated goal to cut production emissions 42% by 2030 against a 2021 baseline. But energy use is a real consideration and worth including in any honest comparison.

The sustainability question isn’t abstract when it comes to sleepwear.
