Why we believe TENCEL Lyocell is best for baby clothing

We’re proud to be doing our very best every day to produce products that make raising the future generation easier, while also being safe and gentle as possible for little humans and the planet they’ll inherit someday. That means being mindful of the materials we use.

4 reasons we love TENCEL™ for baby & toddler clothes

Unbelievably Soft

TENCEL fibres are naturally soft and smooth (some say even softer than silk!), making for the perfect fabric for delicate and sensitive baby skin. The softness is a super power for preventing irritation and maximizing comfort.

Incredibly Durable

TENCEL is soft like bamboo, but stands up better to machine washing (even frequent washing, which, let’s be honest, is hard to avoid with little ones!), holding its shape better and pilling less than bamboo.

It also withstands the regular wear and tear that inevitably comes with active babies and toddlers —making it perfect for handing down to future family members or for consignment.

Temperature Regulating & Moisture Wicking

TENCEL is naturally wicking and breathable, keeping babies and toddlers warm in the winter and cool and dry in the summer. And that means better sleep for everyone.

Certified Hypoallergenic & Skin-Friendly

Extensive dermatological testing has proven TENCEL to be the ideal fabric for babies with sensitive skin and even eczema. It’s naturally hypoallergenic and its smooth fibre surface minimizes friction against delicate skin.

It’s also OEKO-TEX certified, so parents can rest assured that it’s been thoroughly tested and proven to be free from more than 1,000 harmful substances.

Feature

TENCEL™ Lyocell

Bamboo Viscose/Rayon

Fibre Source

Sustainably harvested eucalyptus wood (from FSC Certified forests)

Bamboo plant (but heavily chemically processed)

How the materials are made

Closed-loop process (reuses 99.8% of water & solvents)

Chemically intensive process (with potential environmental impact)

Breathability

Tencel is excellent – regulates temperature well

Bamboo is good, but not as consistent as TENCEL™

Moisture-wicking

Tencel keeps baby dry and comfy because of its high moisture wicking properties

Bamboo is moderate it can retain moisture under layers unlike Tencel

Softness

Tencel is silky soft, even after multiple washes

Bamboo is very soft initially, but may pill or lose softness over time

Durability

Tencel is strong and durable, holds shape after washing

Bamboo is less durable, prone to stretching and pilling

Hypoallergenic

Tencel is naturally hypoallergenic,  ideal for sensitive skin and dermatologist recommended

Bamboo is generally gentle, but chemical processing may leave residue

Eco-Certifications

All Tencel is certified by OEKO-TEX® and others

Not all bamboo viscose is certified; depends on manufacturer

Feel & Fit

Tencel is stretchy with structure — fits well without bagging

Bamboo is often too stretchy, can lose shape or cling

How TENCEL™ Lyocell is made

TENCEL™ Lyocell contains biodegradable fibres (they’re compostable!) made from responsibly sourced eucalyptus tree pulp. It's made using a closed-loop production process where 99.8% of the solvents are reused during manufacturing, helping to minimize waste and environmental impact.

Contrast that with bamboo, which grows quickly without pesticides, but is converted to rayon through chemical processing that can be hard on the environment.
