Underwater scene without the chaos.

A 2-pack of Tanboocel Muslin burp cloths in Mermaids — mermaids, shells, seaweed on aqua. Four layers of Tanboocel muslin per cloth, sized 22 x 12 inches. For the spit-up months (0–6), the stroller-wipe months that follow, and the light-blanket use case for the rest.

Tanboocel vs. generic bamboo

"Bamboo" as a textile claim is doing a lot of work. The fiber is actually viscose — bamboo pulp processed into a regenerated cellulose fiber. The process can be clean or dirty depending on which chemicals get used and whether they're recovered. Generic bamboo viscose typically discharges its solvents. Tanboocel uses a closed-loop system that recovers ~99% of the solvent and water. The fiber is the same softness as generic bamboo viscose, produced at a fraction of the environmental cost.

Cloth construction

Each cloth: 22 x 12 inches, four layers. Single-layer muslin is too thin for burp duty — spit-up soaks through to the shoulder. Four layers absorbs without bleeding. The cloth softens through the first few washes (manufacturing sizing wears off); by wash three or four, the fabric drapes the way it's meant to.

Why the 2-pack

You need two minimum at any time — one in use, one in the wash. The 2-pack is the per-cloth price-optimal way to buy. The two cloths share the print so they look like a set in laundry baskets and gift boxes.

Beyond burping

Once spit-up tapers off (somewhere around month 6), the cloth gets reassigned. Most parents discover the same reuses in roughly this order: stroller wipe for face and hand cleanup, light blanket for car seats, nursing cover, ad-hoc bib substitute for milky drool.

Material & care

  • 100% Tanboocel Muslin (viscose from bamboo, closed-loop production)
  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified
  • Machine wash cold or warm; tumble dry low or hang dry
  • Softens with each wash
  • Print is dye-set into the fabric; doesn't fade in the first 50–100 cycles

Frequently asked

How many do we need? 4–6 cloths total during months 0–4. Start with two 2-packs; add a third pack if you find yourself doing burp-cloth laundry daily.

Tanboocel vs. cotton? Cotton burp cloths get scratchy after a few washes. Tanboocel stays soft. Cotton absorbs slower; muslin wicks faster. Most families try both and end up keeping the muslin.

Can it work as a light blanket? Yes — four-layer muslin is opaque and warm-enough for a stroller or car-seat cover. Not warm enough for nighttime sleep (use the sleep bags for that).

Does the print match other Loulou Lollipop products? Yes — many burp cloth prints work with muslin swaddles for gift-set buying.

How Tanboocel feels in practice

The first time you handle a Tanboocel Muslin cloth, it feels softer than cotton and slightly heavier than generic bamboo viscose. By the third or fourth wash, the cloth softens further — manufacturing sizing wears off and the fiber relaxes. Customer notes consistently report that the cloths get softer for the first ~10 washes, then plateau.

Absorbency is faster than cotton. A spit-up the size of a quarter is absorbed in 2-3 seconds; cotton burp cloths take 5-8 seconds at the same volume. The faster absorbency matters in the half-second window between "baby spits up" and "spit-up reaches the shoulder."

Sustainability claim, verifiable

The Tanboocel fiber comes from FSC-certified bamboo plantations. The processing facility runs a closed-loop system where solvents and water are recovered and reused — independently audited. The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification on the finished cloth verifies the absence of harmful substances. These are not marketing claims; they're documentation that can be requested.

For families who care about the environmental footprint of baby textiles: Tanboocel sits in the same sustainability tier as Lyocell (used in Loulou Lollipop's sleep sacks). Generic bamboo viscose sits well below it. The price premium over generic bamboo is small — typically 10-15% — and represents the actual production cost difference.
